Revealing key findings of the SADC Business Council’s Tourism Skills Gap audit

The SADC Business Council recently undertook a comprehensive Tourism Skills Gap Audit, surveying 227 enterprises across the region. This pivotal initiative aimed to uncover skills deficiencies in critical areas such as communication, customer service, digital capabilities, management, and specialized technical skills within the tourism industry.

A Closer Look at the Skills Deficiencies Our audit unveiled significant gaps in management competencies, front office guest service, housekeeping, and culinary skills. Interestingly, while many companies consider themselves proficient, the survey data points to a clear mismatch between the skills that are currently available in the workforce and those that are needed.

The Emerging Challenges We observed more pronounced deficiencies in management capabilities, digital literacy, and niche skills like culinary arts. The development of soft skills and the acquisition of digital skills are increasingly urgent, as technology continues to transform tourism operations. Respondents from the survey particularly emphasized the need for more practical, work-integrated learning as opposed to theoretical academic components. Smaller enterprises highlighted their need for assistance in developing management and digital capacities.

A Collaborative Approach to Addressing the Gap To tackle these challenges, a concerted effort is necessary, involving collaboration between government entities, training institutes, and industry players. Our recommended actions include increasing opportunities for internships and apprenticeships, promoting partnerships between industry and academia, investing in the upskilling of trainers, developing niche credentials, and providing subsidies for SMEs to access training.

Looking Forward There’s an ongoing need for research to accurately quantify skills mismatches, identify best practices both locally and globally, and explore effective skills development strategies in successful tourism regions. Closing these skills gaps is essential for enhancing the competitiveness, productivity, and service quality of the SADC region’s tourism sector.

As we forge ahead, the SADC Business Council remains committed to addressing these challenges and strengthening our region’s tourism industry through skill enhancement and collaborative efforts. Stay tuned for more updates and initiatives in this critical area.
